Luteal Phase Skin Tips: How to Support Your Skin Before Your Period

The luteal phase (typically the 10–14 days before your period) is when many women notice oilier skin and more frequent breakouts.

During this phase:

  • Oestrogen declines
  • Progesterone rises
  • Androgen influence becomes relatively stronger
  • Inflammatory signalling may increase

This creates an environment where pores are more likely to become congested.

5 tips for how to support your skin during this time:

1. Cleanse consistently

Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser morning and evening. Avoid harsh foaming cleansers that compromise the barrier, as barrier damage can increase inflammation.

2. Incorporate targeted exfoliation

Mild chemical exfoliants can help prevent congestion:

  • Salicylic acid (BHA) penetrates oil and supports pore clarity
  • Lactic acid (AHA) provides gentle surface exfoliation

Limit exfoliation to a few times per week to avoid over-sensitising the skin.

3. Choose lightweight hydration

Look for non-comedogenic moisturisers containing:

  • Ceramides
  • Niacinamide
  • Glycerin

Maintaining barrier integrity is essential, even if skin feels oilier.

4. Spot treat early

If you are prone to deep, cystic spots, apply targeted treatments at the first sign of inflammation.

5. Stay consistent

Hormonal acne is cyclical. Supporting your skin proactively during the luteal phase rather than reacting once a breakout appears can make a big difference over time.

The goal isn’t to eliminate every fluctuation. It’s to reduce intensity and support balance.
